Commercially prepared jerky is often loaded with sugar and other additives. Jerky is naturally low in fat, so if you’re a ketogenic dieter, don’t expect this meat to keep your macros balanced. It’s also high in protein, which is great for any low carb diet. It pays to check out the ingredient list, and it’s absolutely necessary to check the nutrition labels to find out which jerky suits your needs.

1Jack Link’s Original Beef Jerky

  • Carb Count: 5 grams of carbs in 1 ounce of jerky. However, some of the other varieties are lower – the Jack Link's Sriracha Beef Jerky has 4 grams of carbs per ounce, while the Jack Link's Small Batch Original is the lowest with only 2 grams of carbs per ounce!
  • Macros: 5 grams of carbs, 1 gram of fat, and 12 grams of protein. For those of you struggling to get your protein in daily, any jerky will help, and Jack Link’s is no exception, with one of the higher protein counts on this list. The fat content won’t help those of you on a ketogenic diet too much, with only 1 gram per ounce.

Low Carb Jack Link's Macros

Overview:

Jack Link’s is one of the leaders in the jerky industry, and with good reason. The original beef jerky, which is my favorite, has just the right amount of tenderness (which still giving you that slightly tough texture that I personally love).

Pros:

Jack Link’s is always reasonably priced, and usually ends up being cheaper per ounce than many other brands. The company isn’t new to the jerky business – they’ve been around since 1986, and founder Jack Link uses his great-grandfather’s recipes. (In other words, they know what they’re doing.) Plus, this company has a ridiculous number of flavors and variations.

Cons:

Some folks have complained that the Jack Link’s jerky is too salty. Some say that it’s too tough. I haven’t had either of those problems, so I think it just depends on your taste.

My rating:

4/5. I love the taste, and the texture is just right for me: it’s chewy, but not too tough, and it’s just salty enough. As the cheapest jerky of all the ones I tried, this one is the most affordable.

2Chef’s Cut Asian Style Teriyaki Beef Jerky

Numbers that Matter:

  • Carb Count: The Asian Style Teriyaki contains 5 grams of carbs per ounce of jerky, which is pretty normal. If you’re looking for something lower, try the Chef's Cut Buffalo Style Chicken Jerky at only 2 grams of carbs per ounce. (Personally, I’d put up with 6 carbs per ounce for the Honey Barbecue Chicken flavor. Yum!)
  • Macros: 5 grams of carbs, 2.5 grams of fat, and 10 grams of protein. 10 grams of protein is a pretty decent amount, and Chef’s Cut has more than twice the amount of fat as Jack Link’s. Depending on whether you’re doing low carb or keto, that alone may help you decide which jerky is best for you.

Low Carb Chef's Cut Jerky Macros

Overview:

Founded in 2009, Chef’s Cut prides themselves on using real ingredients, and using marinades hand-crafted by owner and executive chef Blair Swiler. The company has a massive amount of creative flavors, and is backed by celebrity investor Olivia Munn.

Pros:

Chef’s Cut does not use sodium nitrate in their jerkies, which is a big plus for health conscious folks. The jerky is tender and thick, and the variety of flavors means there’s something for everyone. They also have some flavors that are very low in carbs – as low as 2 grams of carbs per ounce.

Cons:

The variety of flavors and meats might not be for everybody. If you’ve never tried chicken jerky, for example, don’t expect it to taste just like beef jerky!

My rating:

4/5. The variety of flavors is fantastic, and I love knowing that the owner is a chef who is so closely involved with the production of the jerky. I didn’t give it 5 out of 5 because it is a little more costly.

3Epic Bites Uncured Bacon

Numbers that Matter:

  • Carb Count: This is the reason that the uncured bacon bites are one of my favorites: they have 0 carbs. The ingredients are simply uncured bacon and pork, which means no carbs whatsoever. That’s a win for me! (Other flavors have up to 7 grams of carbs per ounce, which is still very doable on a low carb diet, and passable on a ketogenic diet.)
  • Macros: 0 grams of carbs, 9 grams of fat, and 8 grams of protein. The macros on this product are really stellar. The carb count is perfect, and you probably won’t find another jerky-type of product that has such a high fat content. The amount of protein is slightly lower than some other jerkies, but in my opinion, it’s worth it to help increase my fat intake by so much.

Low Carb Epic Uncured Jerky Macros

Overview:

Epic is a company that was started in 2013, focused on incorporating meat into snack bars. They have since expanded into other products, and are ardent about using meat from animals that have been grass-fed and pasture-raised.

Pros:

Sustainability is important to these guys, and if it is to you as well, then that’s a plus. They have essentially created a new type of snack by incorporating meat into snack bars, which keep you full and keep you going longer. The bites are great for energy on the go.

Cons:

Epic brand products seem to be hit-or-miss with a lot of people. They either love the flavor, or they hate it. Personally, I’m a fan, but your mileage may vary. They also tend to be a little more pricy than most jerkies.

My rating:

3/5. The products are good, but there’s no denying that the Epic products are different, and might take some getting used to.

4Lorissa’s Kitchen Korean Barbecue Steak Strips

Numbers that Matter:

  • Carb Count: For one ounce, the Korean Barbecue Steak Strips have 6 grams of carbs. Lorissa’s Kitchen only has four varieties, and the other three are 6-7 grams of carbs each.
  • Macros: 6 grams of carbs, 1 gram of fat, and 11 grams of protein. Lorissa’s Kitchen jerky is very similar in terms of macros to the Jack Link’s jerky. Pretty low in carbs, very low fat, and a very significant amount of protein.

Low Carb Lorissa's Kitchen Jerky Macros

Overview:

Lorissa’s Kitchen is actually a Jack Link’s brand, focused on younger customers who gravitate towards higher-end snack items. The company only uses 100% grass fed beef and American Humane Certified chickens. The jerky is more tender and comes in smaller, bite-sized pieces.

Pros:

Lorissa’s Kitchen is marketed to be a higher-end snack item, and I think it achieves that. The jerky has a good flavor, and it feels a little more indulgent than most brands. The company uses high quality ingredients, and it shows.

Cons:

The problems most people seem to report with the Lorissa’s Kitchen jerky is that it’s rubbery – perhaps that’s a result of the jerky being “softer” as advertised – and somewhat expensive for the amount you get per bag.

My rating:

4/5. Lorissa’s Kitchen is one of my favorites – great flavors and a reasonable price. However, I couldn’t give it 5/5 because of the lack of variety. Don’t get me wrong, the flavors they offer are fantastic, but there are only four. I’d love it if Lorissa’s Kitchen made a wider variety of jerky flavors.

5Krave Sea Salt Original Beef Jerky

Numbers that Matter:

  • Carb Count: Krave Jerky is higher than most – for 1 ounce of jerky, you’re looking at 11 grams of carbs. If you’re a ketogenic dieter, Krave is probably not an option for you. However, if you’re just a low carb eater, you can probably fit Krave into your diet just fine, as long as you don’t overdo it!
  • Macros: 11 grams of carbs, 1.5 grams of fat, 9 grams of protein. This is one to be careful with; the carb count is high in this brand, and might be too high for a ketogenic dieter, although a low carb eater might be able to factor it into their meal plan from time to time.

Low Carb Krave Jerky Macros

Overview:

According to the company’s website, Krave Jerky is “low in fat, a good source of protein, gluten-free and contains all-natural ingredients with no artificial ingredients and minimal processing,” and are a leading producer of “artisanal-style” snacks. The jerky comes in ten flavors.

Pros:

Many reviews claim that the Krave jerky is more tender than most. The Sea Salt Beef Jerky has just the right amount of saltiness, and is just a tiny bit moist. The large variety of flavors and product types means that you’re likely to find something you enjoy.

Cons:

The jerky has a bit of a sweet flavor – it does contain cane sugar and honey – and has a much higher carb count than most of the others that I’ve tried.

My rating:

3/5. Krave Jerky has quite the fan base, so I hope I don’t offend anyone here! While I really like the products, I have to give it a 3/5 rating because it is significantly higher in carbs than the other jerkies – too high to fit into my diet regularly. The low price is great, and the company itself deserves kudos for their all-natural ingredients.
